I would like to change my Will

If you’re thinking about making amendments to your Will, consider these three options:

  1. Manually changing your Will is a very risky business! If you scribble notes on your Will or cross parts of it out, you’re probably going to cause problems for Probate.  Handwritten alterations can be made to a Will but generally, this option isn’t advised.
  2. A Codicil is like a “mini Will”, making small changes but preserving the rest. However, if your loved ones don’t know the Codicil exists, it could be overlooked and the original Will would be taken at face value.  And who’s to say you haven’t made five, ten, or twenty Codicils to the same Will?  We rarely advise this option.
  3. A new Will lets you review the whole picture including changes in the law. In 2006 there were big changes to how Trusts are taxed, in 2012 a reduced rate of tax was introduced for Wills with charitable gifts and 2020 has seen changes to the way Wills are signed.  A fresh Will is usually the best option.

That isolation was “substantially complete” by the…

Solicitors vs Plastic

Inheriting an ISA

Did you know..? When a person passes away, their surviving spouse/civil partner’s ISA allowance may increase? This is known as the Additional Permitted…

Brothers, sisters and Inheritance Tax
